We all know that furniture plays a big role in making a house feel like home, but did you know that in some cultures, the way you arrange, buy, or even get rid of furniture can bring good luck—or bad? From cursed chairs to lucky tables, people have been linking furniture to fate for centuries.

Let’s explore some of the strangest and most fascinating furniture superstitions from around the world!

1. The Curse of the “Busby Stoop Chair” (UK)

In North Yorkshire, England, there’s a famous chair known as the Busby Stoop Chair—and it’s said to be cursed! Legend has it that a man named Thomas Busby was sentenced to death in 1702 and, before his execution, he cursed the chair. Over the years, multiple people who sat in the chair reportedly died shortly after. It was eventually hung on a wall in a museum to keep people from sitting in it!

2. Never Buy Second-Hand Beds (China)

In Chinese culture, many people believe that buying a second-hand bed is bad luck. Why? Because beds hold energy, and you don’t want to bring someone else’s bad fortune into your home. Even worse, some believe that if a bed belonged to someone who passed away, sleeping on it could bring ghosts and restless spirits into your life!

3. Don’t Rock an Empty Rocking Chair (Ireland & US)

Ever seen an empty rocking chair move on its own? It might seem spooky, but in Irish folklore, rocking an empty rocking chair is like inviting spirits to take a seat. In some versions of the superstition, if the chair rocks by itself, it means a ghost is already sitting there—watching you!

4. Moving Furniture at Night Brings Bad Luck (Russia)

In Russia, it’s believed that moving furniture after dark is bad luck and could invite misfortune into your home. Some say this belief dates back to old times when moving things around at night might disturb spirits or even attract the attention of evil forces. Better to rearrange that couch during daylight hours!

5. Lucky Dining Tables (Italy)

In Italy, some people believe that a round dining table is luckier than a rectangular one. Why? Because a round table encourages conversation and unity, while a rectangular table, with its sharp edges, can create divisions among family members. So, if you want good vibes at dinner, a round table might be the way to go!

6. Never Sleep with Your Feet Facing the Door (Feng Shui, China)

According to Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese practice of arranging spaces for harmony, your bed should never be positioned so that your feet point directly toward the door. This is called the “coffin position” because it resembles how the dead are carried out of a room. It’s believed to bring bad energy and even health problems!

7. The Chair That Grants Wishes (Spain)

In some parts of Spain, there’s a superstition that if you sit in a chair that belongs to an elder or someone respected in the family, you’ll inherit wisdom and good fortune. Some even say that sitting in a grandfather’s chair can bring lifelong success—so maybe that old armchair in your house is more powerful than you think!

Furniture isn’t just about style and comfort—it carries traditions, superstitions, and even a little bit of mystery. Whether or not you believe in these tales, they add an extra layer of history and intrigue to the things we sit, sleep, and dine on every day.
